Robot Taekwon V Live Action Movie

Released in 1976, the original Robot Taekwon V (known as Voltar the Invincible in the U.S.) was the first Korean animated feature film. In 2005, it also became the first Korean film to undergo full digital restoration – a process that took three years to complete. The newly restored film premiered at the 10th Pusan International Film Festival, and enjoyed a successful theatrical release on 170 screens in 2007.

Now, this iconic, taekwondo-kicking robot is set for the live action/CGI update. Planned to be released in 2009 (and to go head-to-head with The Transformers 2 in the Korean market), Robot Taekwon V (2009) is directed by WON Shin-yeon [원신연] of Seven Days and A Bloody Aria fame. Production is handled by Shin Cine [신씨네] (My Sassy Girl), and the budget is estimated at 20 billion Korean Won (over 20 million USD). CGI and visual effects are done by a consortium of Korean VFX companies, including macrograph [매크로그래프], mofac [모팩], Insight Visual [인사이트비쥬얼], DTI (Digital Tetra Inc.) [디티아이], and EON Digital Films[이오엔].

For me, this is one of the greatest news this year so far. This just sounds like a real killer, with all the best Korean VFX companies together, the second-highest budget for a Korean movie ever and it’s a great choice that Won Shin-yeon is going to be direct. It will be interesting to see who will be casted for this movie, too.

This is already the fourth sci-fi movie announced in Korea for 2009.

Nice…

Koreans hip to Paramount’s ‘Hype’

SEOUL — South Korean dance group the Gambler will star in Paramount’s dance movie “Hype Nation,” having teamed up with U.S. music producer and rapper Teddy Riley.

In the $25 million picture being produced by Young Film, Riley plays a music director.

Helmed by Alex Calzatti (”I Am Cuba”), pic follows dance battles between the American R&B group B2K and Korean group the Gambler.

Production begins in the U.S. July 15 with some 40% lensing Stateside and 60% to be shot in South Korea.

Young Film prexy Young Lee, a Korean American producer who has previously partnered with American hip-hop artists, is now casting for a Korean female lead.

South Korea’s DR Music controls Asian rights for the musical content of the film. Company also expects to partner Paramount in the Korean market, though local investors and distribs were not disclosed. Pic will be released worldwide early 2009.

Riley has produced numerous albums by acts including Michael Jackson and Bobby Brown.

Why do you need a Korean female lead? Is there actually going to be a story? Hopefully it’ll be a documentary style film and not a “You Got Served” flick. Also, instead of using the Gamblerz…they should combine a crew again using Born, Darkness, Hong 10, Bruce Lee, The End, Physicx, Ducky, Skim & Wing, Baek, Trickz, and others…but the Gamblerz are a strong choice.

However, I’m not really sure why it should be the Gamblerz vs. B2K…..it doesn’t really make sense. Top Rocks & Power versus music video choreography & style…..I guess?

Movie “21″ offending Asian Americans…

Received this through email and it makes a whole lot of sense. While I can’t say I completely agree with the boycott since there are two Asian American actors casted (Aaron Yoo & Liza Lapira) …and that’s not fair to them. Plus, Jeff Ma makes a cameo…so it probably has his endorsement. I do agree that Hollywood should stop being a-holes and stick to the script….but Hollywood is about the money and dumbing down everything.

Hi SDAP,

You might be curious why as an organization we are boycotting the Movie “21″ which is based on MIT Students who mastered the art of Counting Cards and wreaked havoc on Vegas Casinos, sounds like a great plot and a lot of fun right? I thought so too, but then I dove deeper into the issue and realized that the Real-life Students that pulled this amazing plot/stunt were none other than Asian-Americans.

However Hollywood decided to pull out of the “Asian” casting and put in Non-Asians in a role tailor-written for Asians. From the Professor Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey) to the Main Character (Jim Sturgess) all these actors were substituted for the actual Players in real life (John Chang and Jeff Ma). The Non-fiction Novel written even highlighted the fact that the students utilized the biases that Casinos had with Asians (and how they gambled with large amounts of cash) to get away with Counting Cards (Not an illegal activity). On the team there were even African-Americans who were top card counters as well. However stereotypes still reign in National Mainstream Media. This is completely reprehensible, and we need to take a stand as an ethnic minority organization.

As an Organization SDAP has decided to draw the line, no longer are “Asian” characters stereotyped to Martial Artists and “Geeks who can’t get with the Ladies”, but that we are full Three Dimensional Characters that should be showcased in the National Media.

You can read articles of rhetoric online to further learn about this issue out there. Knowledge will be the only way to accomplish what we yearn for, that is just awareness. Although this movie really does not represent all Asian-Americans, but where does it stop? Lets let our wallets do the talking and Boycott this movie, we need to bring awareness about this issue.

I am proposing that you inform and enlighten your friends/family about what I have brought up and only through Knowledge can we as a society change. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope that if you are passionate about any issues that you come to our Board Meetings every Tuesday Night (USD Library) 9pm and express it as well. Lets share our information and discuss the issues!

You know Hollywood, maybe next time you should make a movie about counting cards rather than base it on true events…then you wouldn’t look like a bunch of liars. ;) Even Wired Magazine sniffed out the BS.

Wired Magazine: Hacking Las Vegas: “The MIT team thrived by choosing BPs [Big Players] who fit the casino mold of the young, foolish, and wealthy. Primarily nonwhite, either Asian or Middle Eastern, these were the kids the casinos were accustomed to seeing bet a thousand bucks a hand. Like many on the team, Kevin Lewis was part Asian, and could pass as the child of a rich Chinese or Japanese executive. “When you’re recruiting, you don’t recruit white kids. They look conspicuous. Asian kids, Greek kids, dark skin fits in better with lots of money in the casinos. White 20-year-olds with $2 million bankrolls stand out,” explains Andrew Tay, one of Lewis’ teammates. “A geeky Asian kid with $100,000 in his wallet didn’t raise any eyebrows.”

My Sassy Girl Remake - trailer

For crying out loud…where’s the violence?!??!?!

Kill it! kill it! BOOOOOOOOOO!

Gianna Junn is just too tall…

blood-vampire-masiela-lusha-1.jpg

This is Masiela Lusha, one of the actresses from Blood: The Last Vampire. She looks kind of creepy here…because I can’t tell if she’s a kid or an adult. It could be the over sized clothing and her large facial features. As an actual adult, she was pretty hot as the Europe born actress playing a Latina in George Lopez’s sitcom.

Shin Ha-Kyun Joins Park Chan-Wook’s THIRST

no_mercy_for_the_rude_01.jpg
OldBoy director Park Chan-Wook’s next film just keeps looking better and better. When word came that Park was making a vampire film, that fact alone was enough to guarantee my butt would be in a seat at my first available opportunity to see the film. When word came that Song Kang Ho was slated to be in the lead role I was even more excited. And now Shin Ha-Kyun - the stellar star of Save The Green Planet and Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance has joined the cast. Song and Shin are arguably the two finest actors working in Korean film today so getting the two of them together in the same project is a big, big deal. (twitch)

Initially, I wasn’t interested in Thirst, actually….I’m still not. However, with Shin joining up with Song Kang Ho in this film, it should be good…whether he’s a psychopath that feeds humans to his dog or a hot headed mute that has soft spot for crying pregnant women.

Snake Eyes from G.I.Joe the movie

Looks pretty cool….nice fake muscles.
