Asian American Identity

My Korea is my parents…it’s through them that I appreciate what Korea is and where I came from. It’s through them that I learn certain customs and traditions related to my DNA……..other than that, I’m as Korean as Kimchee made by Jose in the back kitchen of a Los Angeles Korean restuarant.

My loyalty as a countryman will always be towards America…and despite all it’s flaws and hypocrisy, if there was a war today I was drafted into…I’d be fighting for America proudly.

A lot of Asian American kids these days think they should go to special schools to learn more about their Asian culture. They feel the need to learn things related to ancient old traditions and social standards that are specifically Asian. Yet, they don’t realize that being American is part of their culture….especially when they are born into it. It is healthy to learn more about ones own original culture….but it’s just as important to remember that one is still American and that they are currently writing a new chapter in Asian American history.

I think right now….Asian Americans need to realize…we are creating a new identity that is Asian and American combined and from that standpoint, we need to recognize a perspective that doesn’t rely on Asian countries outside of America. We need to come together and blur the lines between being Chinese, Japanese, South East Asian, and Korean when we’re together…and yet celebrate the differences when we are at home.

I guess…the point is…….I think Asians in America are so divided on where our loyalty lies that they don’t realize they are part of something greater…like creating a completely new identity. Imagine a culture that borrows everything Asian…..similiar to the culinary arts of Singapore, and uses America to celebrate it.

I just think there’s something amazing about the potential in it….

Wang Qianyuan Becomes Public Enemy after Tibetan Freedom Rally

Duke University freshman Wang Qianyuan and her family became public targets after a Tibetan freedom rally, angry Chinese mob gathered online, calling her a “traitor” who should be punished.Wang Qianyuan (aka Grace Wang, 王千源), 21, did not realize she would cause such a frenzy last week when she ran into a group of American students, Tibetan flags tied over their shoulders, getting ready for a vigil at Duke University to support human rights.

She used blue body paint to write “Save Tibet” slogans on the bare back of one of the organizers but did not join their demonstration. (Duke Chinese Students and Scholars Association website started posting “TIBET WAS, IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE CHINA’S” messages a month ago.)

Wang, a Chinese national, knew she was treading on sensitive territory. “But human rights are above everything,” she said later in a telephone interview. Even national pride.

Before long, a video of the 20-year-old freshman, seen standing between pro-Tibet activists and Chinese counterprotesters, was posted on the Internet. Within hours, an angry mob gathered online, calling her a “traitor”!

Someone posted personal information about Wang on the Internet, including her national identification card number, as well as her parents’ address and phone number in China. “Makes us lose so much face. Shoot her where she stands,” one anonymous user wrote in a comment posted above Wang’s portrait from Qingdao No. 2 Middle School.(more)

I admit…I thought boycotting the Olympics to punish China over Tibet could be a good thing and I laughed when people stole the Olympic torch, because one…it’s just funny in general. Two, I don’t really care about the Olympics. When you live in a country that has the NBA, NFL, and NHL…the Olympics is irrelevant and a playground for the NBA all-stars to toy with. Presently, I don’t think it should be boycotted…because the only people who’d be hurting from the boycott are the athletes who have trained hard for many years. It really shouldn’t be made into something political…

When it comes to China versus Tibet…I really don’t know the history but from my perspective…it simply reminds me of when Japan tried to colonize Korea. Chinese people can use “you don’t know our history…”…and all I have to say to that is…”I don’t a give a f*ck.” I don’t really care to learn about it and if they feel Tibet has always been a part of China….then so be it.

However, if the Tibetans are being oppressed, then they deserve better…but I’ll digress. I don’t know the whole story so I shouldn’t pretend to.

Now with the issue of Qang Qianyuan…apparently she was at a free Tibet rally and from her stand point…she was just getting in between the Pro-Tibet and Pro-China people to get dialog. Unfortunately for her, a few pictures of her at the rally was shown on the internet, sparking hateful and traitorous remarks against her. From there, not only was her personal information given out…her parents who live in China, was also given to the world to torment.

Now that’s just stupid.

Are these people that scared that one little girl has that much power that her voice will ruin China? Are you guys that much of a pussy that you need to band up together by the millions and torment one little girl and her parents? She’s just one kid! WTF is wrong with you people? She’s not holding a bomb over China….and even if she was pro-Tibet, is a difference of opinion that powerful that you guys feel the need to cause her family physical pain?

I really don’t care about Tibet separating itself from China, that’s not the issue to me. What is an issue is when people are being treated in a way that’s not right….whether it be the people of Tibet or one little girl who did nothing more than make a stand on the issue. So to all those calling her a traitor and harassing her, quit being a bunch of psychotic pussies and realize…China isn’t going to crumble because of the words coming out of her mouth.

Obama related to Pitt, Clinton to Jolie

By DENISE LAVOIE, Associated Press Writer Wed Mar 26, 7:53 AM ET

BOSTON - This could make for one odd family reunion: Barack Obama is a distant cousin of Brad Pitt, and Hillary Rodham Clinton is related to Pitt’s girlfriend, Angelina Jolie.

Researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society found some remarkable family connections for the three presidential candidates — Democratic rivals Obama and Clinton, and Republican John McCain.

Clinton, who is of French-Canadian descent on her mother’s side, is also a distant cousin of singers Madonna, Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette. Obama, the son of a white woman from Kansas and a black man from Kenya, can call six U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, his cousins. McCain is a sixth cousin of first lady Laura Bush.(yahoo)

Being related to Jolie almost makes me want to vote for Clinton, it’s just too bad she gets caught in too many “calculated” situations.  You’re a politician Clinton, learn to lie without getting caught!

In a recent speech and interviews, the New York senator described a harrowing scene in Tuzla, Bosnia, in which she and her daughter, Chelsea, had to run for cover as soon as they landed for a visit in 1996. But video footage of the day showed a peaceful reception in which a young girl greeted the first lady on the tarmac. (kctv)

damn New Yorkers…

watching Randy Jackson’s Best Dance Crew earlier than me….

I know who got kicked off because a friend was giving me a hard time over it. All I have to say is, how does a crappy dance group like Status Quo make it to no.1 overall.

Are American voters that dunce or is black America offended that a bunch of Asian minorities are out dancing their representatives. Shame on the Americans with bad pedestrian taste….

*sigh*….I guess I shouldn’t be too critical. I should wait for the pacific time slot before I start spitting brimstone and hellfire.

Damn I hate spoilers.

*edit* - Never mind, just watched Status Quo….whomever voted for Status Quo are deaf, blind, and stupid.

The problem with the internet….

It’s a window into the minds of disturbingly stupid people we have on this planet. Think of it as a massive network of morons typing out their idiocy from all over the world since they like feel it’s their duty to share how stupid they are. Face to face, such stupidity would never come out because those online idiots know that’s it’s better to not say anything at all. While there are those ballsy enough to be idiotic in the open, they have very little friends. So to be free from the reality and the negative repercussions of their improper thoughts, they spend their time on-line sharing how dumb they are to people who care nothing for them. I do take some pleasure in making dumb people know they are being idiots….but thank god, compared to the people with good common sense….they are in the minority and will spend their lives on-line rather than off it. This is a good thing of course, because then all I have to do is turn off my computer and forget such idiots plague the world.

Random long distance degrees of seperation…

Work is still slow for me….reallllllly slow. Not because business is bad….it’s just the way the industry works. So I just started thinking about a few people I’m indirectly linked to with no real relationship with.

  • My Dad’s Uncle’s Son’s daughter is the Aunt of Richard Park, a Korean NHL player I used to idolize back in the day…simply for being a Korean hockey player from California.
  • My mom’s friend is the Aunt of Jinu from Jinusean…who gave me an autograph I never asked for.
  • *update* My mom’s friend is buds with Ben Chung’s mom…and of course, my mom doesn’t have a clue who he is.
  • My mom’s friend’s Caucasian friend is one of the breaksk8 member’s mother. Not sure who because my mom doesn’t even know…and yet was still rooting for them!
  • My mom’s church friend turned out to be Mike Song’s mom from the Kaba Modern…whom my mom all of sudden started rooting for despite liking the Jabbawookeez more. Yup, my mom is pretty hip!
  • My Junior high school classmate ended up marrying one of Gwen Stefani’s Harajuki Girls, Rino Nakasone.

What does this have to do with anything….absolutely nothing! I just wished my degrees of seperation were much longer…..so I can mock myself about how my dying uncle’s mother’s sister’s cousin’s adopted nephew donated sperm to someone I was related to.

And on that note….a friend of my mind wanted to hit on Mike Song of Kaba Modern at one of their MTV performances, but her girlfriend stopped her. In return, before her girlfriend could hug Yuri Tag, my friend made sure it never happened……who are they?

why should you care? You shouldn’t….nor will I if you think their actions are no big deal at all other than an episode of “emo-cutenes.”

Random Thoughts & Rants for the day

Random Thoughts 1: What’s better than dreaming about flying through the sky and the puffy white clouds? Well, actually snowboarding on top of fluffy white snow while everyone else is at work. With my new Ipod and it’s play-list for snowboarding, I carved the slopes and landed a few jump thanks to some cups of liquid courage I call, Redbull and Vodka. I can’t wait for next season.

Random Thoughts 2: Despite the romantic dramas, dolled up pretty boys who says all the right things, and flat screen technologies, Korean Society is still backwards in many ways.

There was a moron on my blog who believes that others countries have these same kinds of problems (Captain Obvious to the rescue), so who am I to judge? So what does he expect me to do, ignore it? His mindset is exactly the same as those who recognizes problems but chooses to “hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil” since it’s easier to deal with. How noble of them. In Korea’s case, they need more people speaking out and condemning these acts and attitudes, each time it happens. It should not just be from the rape victims….but from everyone with any sort of common sense or humanity left inside them. The point is, you should not ease on what is clearly wrong just because you’re too lazy to say it’s wrong.
